The Nigerian Army has opened its doors for partnership with Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State chapter, on sports development as a way of ensuring security in the state.

The partnership window was opened when the executive members of the chapter led by its Chairman, Tony Oji, paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Commandant, 302, Artillery Regiment in Onitsha, Col. Idongesit Akpan.

Addressing the executives, Col. Akpan hailed Anambra SWAN for taking the step to partner with the military in sports saying that it was an indication that the public are beginning to see the army as an integral part of the society.

He said the games will not only encourage positive competition but will also enhance individual well being and fitness.

The Commandant noted that though he can only boast of a fair team, he likes the idea and will be ready to participate with the team when the stage is set.

“I must commend you for coming and choosing to partner with us in this noble idea. It shows the public perception about us is changing and that is the result of professionalism and discipline in the force now.

“We are ready to work with anybody who is interested in helping us have peace, not those we can’t vouch for.

“For these games, I am interested, we shall work with you to make it work,” the Commandant said.

Akpan observed that SWAN was a crucial part of military arrangement as it is one of the departments among other agencies.

Earlier in his speech, SWAN Chairman and leader of the delegation said that the new SWAN executive in the state was working towards taking sports to the next level in the state adding that partnership with the army will help take away the impression created by the youths that  security agents are monsters.

He hailed the security agencies in the state for working hard to ensure that the good security in the state is sustained adding that the military is at the top echelon of the recorded success.

Oji noted that the essence of the game was to enhance the already existing relationship between the various security agencies in the state as well as the society.

He said, “We want to take sporting activities in the state to the next level. We have a venue already, the foremost sports facility investor in Nigeria, Rommy Ezeonwuka has agreed to make the Rojenny Sports complex available for this Security Sports Festival.

“The security agencies in Anambra State have done well in ensuring peace in hence, we want to use this opportunity to bring them together in a calm atmosphere to unwind,” he said.
