With the Nigerian senior national team coach Gernot Rohr working hard to find a number one goalkeeper, US-based shot-stopper Joel Isyag has raised his hand.
Reports indicate that the American based goalkeeper says he has what it takes to fill that gap and solve goalkeeping issues in the Super Eagles team.
Isyag, who stands at over 6.2ft, has recently joined the Super Eagles Football Club of Maryland and has already become his team’s first choice shot-stopper with over six clean sheets in his last six games coupled with individual awards.
Reports reveal that Carl Ikeme’s return to the national team has been ruled out for the rest of the season and that has caused headaches for Rohr.
Ikeme is set to miss the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon and the 2019 CAF African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in June.
However, Isyag said he is optimistic that his inclusion in the national team will make that position more competitive.
“I know that composure, positioning, sharp reflexes, agility, techniques, anticipation, ball handling, coupled with great saves are just some of the attributes of a good goalkeeper and I truly have them all,” he is quoted by All Africa website.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles have had their goalkeeping challenges since the departure of Lille keeper, Vincent Enyeama, as he quit the national team a few years ago.
The discovery of Ikeme helped to stabilise the defence for sometime, but Rohr seems not to have confidence in his assistants, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi. (mtnfootball.com)
