Former Super Eagles’ striker, Victor Ikpeba popularly known and called The Prince of Monaco, has dismissed with the wave of the hands, the insinuation that following the emergence of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon as African champions in the February Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles are now under pressure in their double header World Cup games in August.
According to him, it is not true that Eagles are under pressure of any kind following the triumph of the Lions of Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations rather; it is the central African nation that is under pressure because at the moment, the Eagles have four points advantage over the Cameroonians in their World Cup Qualifiers, having garnered the maximum six points to Cameroon’s two points.
“I don’t understand what you mean by the Super Eagles being under pressure as a result of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon emerging champions at the February Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon,” Ikpeba declared.
“Why should anybody insinuate that the Super Eagles are under pressure? Under pressure over what if I may ask?
“Let me make it clear, if there is any person or team that should be under any form of pressure, it should be the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. They are the ones that should be under pressure because in our World Cup Qualifying Group, each team in that group have played two matches. It is only the Eagles that have pocketed the maximum points.
“As we speak, we have six points from the two matches and the Lions have two points. We have four points advantage over them. So, where does the pressure come from? You see, we should not be creating panics where none exists. These boys have done well so far and I believe that they will continue to do well because they know what is at stake.
“And mind you, the World Cup Qualifier is different from the Africa Cup of Nations. It is true that we were not at the AFCON in February; that does not in any way remove any thing from these young enterprising lads in Eagles’ squad,” Ikpeba said.
Continuing, the former Eagles’ striker expressed confidence in the ability of the present Eagles’ players to deliver the World Cup and Africa Nations Cup tickets. He explained that his confidence in the team stems from their current form, determination, zeal and commitment to deliver the two tickets to wipe away the tears of Nigerians for missing out in the AFCON for two consecutive times.
“You see, I must tell you that I have implicit confidence in this present squad of the Super Eagles. My confidence in them stems from the current forms of most of the players. They are young, talented, enterprising, they are determined and they have the zeal and commitment to ensure that they secure both the World Cup and AFCON tickets for the country in order to wipe away our tears for missing out on AFCON on two consecutive occasions.
“I think that all we need to do is to pray for them, give them all the necessary support that they need. They need encouragement and not creating fear where none exist.
“Look, before our first game in the World Cup Qualifiers against the Chipolopolo of Zambia, nobody gave this team any chance including my humble self, but they went there and picked the maximum points. As if that was not enough, when it was the time for our game against Algeria, people said that the Desert Foxes who are rated No1 on the continent by FIFA are coming to teach us football lessons.
“What happened at the end of the day? Eagles showed that their victory over Zambia in Ndola was not a fluke as the Algerians were beaten 3-1. So, what are we talking about? When we get to the bridge we will cross it,” Ikpeba submitted.
