One of Nigeria's top grassroots teams, BJ Foundation FC of Benin City are striking fear in the minds of other teams that are set to participate in the forthcoming Edo State FA cup. The well-known team have been playing a series of friendly matches against top opposition and have had a good run.
Last week, professional division one side, Delta Force of Asaba came calling at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City and were dismissed 2-0 by BJ. Then, on Saturday morning, Warri Wolves, relegated last season from the Nigeria Premier League were beaten by the youthful BJ team 2-1 also at the same Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Warri Wolves started the game looking like a side that meant serious business, pressing BJ high up the pith and missing a couple of early chances.
BJ gradually grew into the game, adopting a 4-2-4 formation, which sought to boycott the midfield press of the Wolves. It began to bear fruits as any time BJ found themselves in the Warri Wolves half, they had enough numbers upfront to send shivers down the spine of the visitors.
The first half, however, ended scoreless, leaving both sides with confidence about the second half.
It was BJ who opened scoring soon after resumption of play. Burly attacker Uche Epete who had been lively throughout, received a pass at the edge of the Wolves box. He swerved his man and cut to the right, just inside the box, before letting fly a bullet.
Warri Wolves would have further found themselves behind but BJ missed some good chances to put them to the sword.
After riding their luck, Wolves scored a lucky goal midway into the second half when a weak shot from outside the box somehow squirmed past Anthony Shangar in goal for BJ.
BJ, however, retook the lead with a beautiful late goal form substitute Tochukwu who surprised the Wolves keeper with a shot from the left, when the keeper was expecting a cross.
The Edo challenge cup kicks off on the 28th of March.
Meanwhile, participating clubs are awaiting their player licences form from the Edo FA.
