Steve Onyeacholam, Chairman, Technical Committee of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NaqF) and a former chairman of the Technical committee of Delta State Sports Commission, is not optimistic about sports activities this year.
Speaking with Daily Sports via telephone from his base in Benin City, the Delta State-born former national swimmer, explained that his pessimism about sports development in the country this year stems from the lack of money in the country.
He explained that as far as he is concerned, everything depends on the availability of funds because without money nothing can be done. He said since there is no money in circulation in the country he does not see sports making any head way in 2016 unless miracle happens.
“I don’t see much happening this year in sports because there is no money in the country as we speak. Things are difficult as you can see,” he stressed.
“There is no gain saying that all is dependent on availability of funds to sports federations to carry out their programmes for the year but as we are all aware, there is economic recession in the country. There is no money anywhere.
“So, tell me if there is no money, how can activities be carried out? Or is there money with you? If I come to you to ask for money.
“So, it is based on this that I don’t see much happening in sports this year in the country unless by God’s grace there is a turnaround in the economy if not, forget it,” he declared.
