Having bounced back from a 1-0 defeat by Cameroon to convincingly beat Egypt, South Africa will have to raise their level still further on Tuesday when they face Nigeria in the semi-final at the Stade Municipal de Limbe.
Desiree Ellis’ side have proven to be something of a mixed bag thus far, playing a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe before their loss to the Indomitable Lioness and responding with a Andisiwe Mgcoyi-inspired 5-0 win over the north Africans.
For Nigeria, Asisat Oshoala will again be the woman of whom much will be expected from as she will lead her team’s attack. She boasts of six goals in three games to be in pole position for the top scorer’s prize.
And South Africa’s Nompulelelo Nyandeni sure knows what to expect from the most successful women’s team in Africa.
“It is always a battle of the best when we face Nigeria,” Nyandeni told Supersport.
“The rivalry between us started long before our days in the national team, and playing against the Super Falcons is always like a cup final, regardless of the stage of the tournament.
“In any case once you are in the last four you can’t pick and choose. Those teams did not get there by fluke, and to get to the top you have to go past them.
“It is not going to be an easy game and I am confident we can walk away with victory. We have beaten them before and, to do that again, we will have to play as a team.”
The Super Falcons have lost just once to their rivals in the history of the competition – which came in the semi-final of the 2012 edition with a 1-0 margin. And should history repeat itself, Florence Omagbemi’s ladies will have to fight for the dubious honour of a bronze medal.
And should they conquer, they face the winner between Cameroon and Ghana in the final at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaoundé on Saturday.
