Organisers of the Fans for Fun U-17 Unity Football Tournament in Lagos have announced a prize pool of N10m, as well as a tour of Liverpool FC’s academy for the top four teams and 18 outstanding players at this year’s edition.
The grassroots tournament, designed for school-based players, will kick off on May 13 across four centres in Lagos.
The venues include the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (Onikan Stadium), Maracana Stadium, NITEL Playground in Oshodi, and the University of Lagos Sports Centre.
Speaking at a pre-tournament press conference held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, the organisers, led by sports enthusiast Olatunbosun Akande, said the competition aims to bridge the gap created by ageing talent in Nigerian football by providing opportunities for young players from schools to showcase their abilities.
Akande emphasised that the focus of the tournament is not primarily on monetary rewards but on player development and exposure, although a total of N10m will be shared among the top four teams.
“Despite the fact that we are not focused on giving these young players money, we have set aside N4m for the winners, while the second-placed team will receive N3m. The third- and fourth-placed teams will get N2m and N1m respectively,” he said.
He added that 18 outstanding players will be selected at the end of the tournament and will embark on a tour of Liverpool FC’s International Academy in the United Kingdom.
Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Mr Dotun Coker, hailed the initiative, noting that the tournament will also feature female teams from across the 57 local governments and local council development areas in the state.
He added that the FA would provide the necessary technical support for the competition.
