Ecobank, NCF Set for 2026 National Schools Team Chess Championship

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 1, 2026

All arrangements have been concluded for the 2026 Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship, organised in partnership with the Nigeria Chess Federation. The highly anticipated third edition is scheduled for May 7 and 8, 2026, at the Ecobank Pan-African Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking at the official unveiling, Adekunle Adewuyi, Segment Head: Education, Faith-Based and Social Services at Ecobank Nigeria, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to delivering a successful and impactful championship. He noted that the competition continues to grow rapidly, attracting widespread participation from students across the country.

According to him, the championship has evolved into an award-winning scholastic platform designed to promote intellectual development and nurture the next generation of chess talents. Building on the success of the previous edition, which recorded over 2,500 students from more than 450 schools, organisers are optimistic about surpassing those figures this year.

Also speaking, the Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Prince Adeyinka Adewole, expressed appreciation to Ecobank Nigeria for its continued support. He highlighted the steady improvement in organisation and participation since the inaugural edition and assured stakeholders of an even more impactful event in 2026.

The championship will be held in a team format, beginning with the Primary Schools category on May 7, followed by Secondary on May 8. Participants will compete in a six-round rapid format.

With a prize pool exceeding ₦20m, alongside trophies, medals, and certificates, the championship promises to reward excellence while encouraging broader participation. Beyond competition, the initiative is aimed at fostering critical thinking, discipline, and strategic skills among young people, with inclusive programs that also cater to schools for the blind.

The 2026 edition is set to further consolidate its position as one of Nigeria’s leading school chess events, inspiring students and shaping future champions.
