NWFL fines Ibom Angels N2.5m after Uyo violence

The Nigeria Women’s Football League has fined Ibom Angels N2.5m and ordered the club to play three home matches behind closed doors following crowd violence and the assault on Bayelsa Queens players and officials after their premiership fixture in Uyo on Wednesday, The PUNCH reports.

The sanctions were announced on Thursday, after the league reviewed match officials’ reports and video evidence from the matchday five encounter.

Supporters of Ibom Angels were found to have encroached onto the pitch and attacked members of the visiting team, an incident the league said breached its regulations and the principles of fair play.

Under the ruling, Ibom Angels were fined N1.5m for contravening article 26.1 on assault, intimidation and offensive conduct, with an additional N1m imposed for bringing the game into disrepute and failing to provide adequate security.

The club must also play its next three home fixtures without spectators in line with article 16.4 of the NWFL regulations.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi said the measures were necessary to protect the competition.

“The safety of players, officials and match personnel is non-negotiable,” she said.

“What occurred in Uyo represents a serious breach of our regulations and the values of the NWFL. We will take stiffer actions against any club whose supporters engage in violence or conduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute.”

The closed-door fixtures will be Ibom Angels’ home games against Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens and Naija Ratels, scheduled for January and February.

The league also warned that failure to comply with the sanctions or any repeat incident could lead to harsher penalties, including extended venue bans.

The match itself ended in a 2-1 victory for Bayelsa Queens, who remain top of the table. Ojiyovwi Kesiena opened the scoring in the 20th minute after a through pass from Janet Akekoromowei, before Janet doubled the lead in the 39th minute. Ibom Angels pulled one back through Helen Daniel on 58 minutes, but the Prosperity Girls held on for all three points.

Trouble broke out after the final whistle as players exchanged pleasantries, with home supporters invading the pitch and attacking Bayelsa Queens players, who ran for safety.

Head coach Whyte Ogbonda was beaten while trying to shield his players and was left with a bloodied mouth according to the club.

The incident sparked widespread condemnation on social media.

Charles Odo wrote on Instagram, “Hopefully they are punished so hard, the club goes into bankruptcy. Next time, they will keep their fans in check.”

Adeyemi Oluwabusayomi added, “Just cancel them from the league. Else whatever punishment is given, this will still repeat itself.”

Michael Polycarp asked, “Why would grown as* men attempt or try to attack a team of ladies?” Taiwo Ajibola commented, “Reason Nigerian league can’t be rated,” while Abieyuwa Obayangbona simply described the scenes as “disgraceful.”
