The Nigeria army successfully rescued Benue Buffaloes after the team was kidnapped on their way back from Lagos following participation in the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2, which concluded last Friday, The PUNCH reports.
The team, which finished ninth in the recently concluded league, was kidnapped by armed men just after Otukpo in Benue State, according to the Handball Federation of Nigeria.
The HFN confirmed that they were later rescued through the swift intervention of the Nigeria army, whose prompt action prevented a potentially worse outcome.
The President of the federation, Jibril Ojih, expressed deep sympathy to the players, coaches, and management of Benue Buffaloes following the incident.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ojih condemned the traumatic experience, describing it as “a sad and heartbreaking ordeal that no athlete, coach, or official should ever be subjected to,” while also commending the army for their quick response.
“I extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Benue Buffaloes team. What they went through is unimaginable, which no sportsperson should be subjected to. We thank God and the Nigeria army for their safe rescue,” he said.
The HFN president also extended his condolences to the Benue State Sports Ministry, acknowledging the emotional and psychological impact the incident has had on the state’s sporting community.
“Our hearts go out to the Benue State Sports Ministry. The board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria and the entire Nigeria handball family is with you in this trying moment. You are not alone,” he added.
Ojih further called for enhanced safety measures for travelling sports teams, emphasising that athlete welfare must be a national priority. He reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting the Benue Buffaloes as they recover from the ordeal.
“We will stand by the team and ensure they receive all the support they need as they heal and look forward to future competitions,” he said.
The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by sports teams on the road, highlighting the importance of both security and rapid response measures to protect athletes and officials nationwide.
