The Onitsha Country Club, Anambra state, has taken a bold step toward its vision of becoming Nigeria’s premier recreational hub with the construction of N100 million new tennis academy and a 300-capacity sports pavilion.
The construction groundbreaking held on Nov. 23 featured the recognition of six notable personalities with honorary patron awards and the presentation of medals to the club’s elite, and the foundation stone laid by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sir Tony Ezenna, Chairman of Orange Drugs Pharmaceuticals Ltd., represented by Chief Ifeanyi Ojimba.
The Club President, Anietonwa Kingsley Ajulufo, while taking some journalists round the construction site on Wednesday, said the target was to complete the project within six months with availability of fund.
He said the sports pavilion would house tennis academy, a hall, changing room and staff quarter, and then the pavilion in the first floor when completed.
"The academy is designed to train local children to become world class athletes and potentially build careers professionally," Ajulufo noted.
According to him, there is an existing bungalow in the site for the past 30 years, "but because we are landlocked, we have to demolish it to be able to erect the sports pavilion.
"This sports pavilion will house tennis academy to bring the kids in Fegge, Onitsha, the host area together and teach them how to play tennis. This is one of the reasons we are doing it.
"The budget we made for this project is N100 million, that is the target. God has been faithful. The target we made for ourselves is that in six months, we should be able to complete this project.
"We are also calling on the Anambra state government to come and support us, you know, this is first sports club in the state, about 50 years.
"Everything you are seeing here is the money being brought by members, freewill donations, and also great philanthropists and form men of goodwill in the society.
"We have hope that by the special grace of God in six months time, we should be able to complete it, if we have the fund."
Ajulufo commended the Chairman of the building committee, Patrick Aniekwe and his team for working tirelessly to ensure the project’s aim of nurturing young tennis talents in Fegge is achieved.
