Former world cruiserweight boxing champion Bash Ali returns to the ring today after 21 years out of action when he faces Prince Bob Alagoro in the main event of “Legendary Ring Return” at Shalom Park & Events Centre, opposite General Hospital, Igando, Lagos.
The 69-year-old, who last fought professionally in 2004, has promised the fight will not go over one round.
“The fight is not going to go over one round, which is three minutes. If it goes over one round, then I will retire from boxing and never fight again,” he told Saturday PUNCH.
“He thinks he can beat me because we sparred several years ago and I let him win, so he thinks he can beat me, but he is too old to share a ring with me.”
The bout is set to feature top Nigerian boxers, including Idris Hamza, Segun “War” Adeyemi, Williams “Kaki Fire” Amosu, Sodiq “Golden Boy” Oyakojo, Kabiru Ashiru, Ekenne Richard Usoni, Ibrahim Olajibu, and Don King Essien.
The 12-bout bill, promoted by New Era Boxing Promotions, includes a national middleweight challenge contest between Idris Hamza and Lawal Faruk. Opeyemi Ibraheem will take on Akeem Muri in the bantamweight class, whilst Lucky Oyinbu and Sahid Sodiq will clash in the lightweight challenge.
“The Bash Ali and Prince Bob Alagoro matchup will be the icing on the cake of a night boxing fans across Nigeria and beyond have been eagerly looking forward to,” said Brigadier-General Idowu Akinlawon (rtd), CEO of New Era Promotions.
The event has been sanctioned by the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, with Secretary General Olu Aboderin reaffirming the board’s support and expressing confidence that the show will further promote professionalism and growth of boxing in Nigeria.
Ali’s return comes months after legendary heavyweight Ike “The President” Ibeabuchi successfully returned to the ring at age 52, knocking out Idris Afinni after three rounds in August.
