Stanley Nwabali has apologised to Nigerians following the Super Eagles’ defeat in the World Cup playoff, saying the team “gave everything for the badge” in their push for a 2026 World Cup ticket.
Nigeria’s hopes ended after a 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the African playoff final, with the game tied 1–1 after extra time.
The shot-stopper saved two kicks in the shootout, but it was not enough to cancel out misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi.
DR Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, scored the winning penalty kick to send DR Congo into the intercontinental playoffs for the World Cup.
In a post on Instagram after the match on Sunday, Nwabali said he was once a fan of the Super Eagles and understands “how it feels giving you a disappointing night”.
He added that the team’s “best wasn’t enough” and the players “take full responsibility.”
