Ikoyi Club celebrates 87th anniversary

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 3, 2025

Ikoyi Club 1938 will hold a week-long celebration to mark its 87th anniversary, and the club’s chairman, Akinwumi Akintola, said the event would celebrate the achievements of one of Nigeria’s oldest social and recreational facilities.

“For the past 87 years, the club has sustained its legacy as the number one recreation club in sub-Saharan Africa with improved facilities where members come to relax, exercise, recreate, share business ideas and burn off calories in a conducive environment,” Akintola said.

He added that all eight sporting sections — golf, tennis, table tennis, squash, swimming, badminton, billiards, snooker and pool — now have modern equipment comparable to facilities anywhere in the world.

“Over the decades, our club has not only remained a beacon of excellence but has also been technology-driven. It has also adapted and thrived in the ever-evolving landscape of social and recreational life in Nigeria, and we’ll continue to keep the flag flying,” he said.

The vice chairman of the club and chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Bolaji Martins, revealed the celebration, themed ‘Globalisation, the world in one club’, would start on Tuesday, September 30, with a novelty football match between members of the planning committee and club staff.

Other events scheduled include an anniversary symposium and business day featuring select professionals, children and junior members party, ladies’ night, fashion parade, dance party, and elders’ party.

There will also be a digital night with interactions on artificial intelligence and an aviation day featuring discussions with Qatar and Turkish Airlines.

The celebration will end on Sunday, October 5, with a gala night.

“We are grateful to all our sponsors for identifying with the anniversary. We promise there will be no dull moment throughout the week-long celebration,” Martins said.

Ikoyi Club 1938 officially came into existence on September 29, 1938, through the merger of the European Club and the Lagos Golf Club.
