Nigeria are through to the final of the IHF Trophy Africa men’s continental phase following their hard-fought 44-33 victory over Cameroon on Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, The PUNCH reports.
The defending champions, led by coach Emeka Nnamani, fought hard against a defensively-minded Cameroonian side from the first blast of the whistle, scoring more from the wings and fast breaks to win the first half 22-15 despite the odds.
They started the second half in the same vein, with left-back Christian Bolaji dictating proceedings with vital goals from the 9 metres and the wings to win the match 44-33.
Foloki, who got injured after a collision with the Cameroon goalkeeper in the last minute of the match, was voted the Most Valuable Player of the match.
Speaking after the match, Nnamani praised his team for fighting hard against Cameroon and doing everything possible to get to the final once again.
He said, “I am very excited that we did enough to defeat Cameroon in the semi-final.
“I want to praise the boys for doing everything humanly possible and fighting hard against Cameroon.
“Now we will make sure we do our best in the final to qualify for the intercontinental phase.”
Nigeria will now play Guinea in the final on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Nigeria time.
