POTM award thrills Flamingos’ Chidi

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 21, 2024

Flamingos striker Harmony Chidi has expressed her delight after claiming the Player of the Match award in Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Ecuador in their second Group A match of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Chidi failed to get on the score sheet in Nigeria’s opening 4-1 win over New Zealand but lived up to the billing at Estadio Cibao, Santiago de Los Caballeros, on Saturday night, grabbing Nigeria’s second goal in the 54th minute as Bankole Olowookere’s side continued their sterling displays in the South American nation.

Reacting to her fine performance capped by the prestigious award, the young striker said, “I am the happiest person on earth because this is a dream come true. I’m very happy, and I bless God for it. I don’t know how to express this because I am filled with joy right now. When it seemed like it wasn’t working, my coach and teammates encouraged me to do well.

“I also want to thank Nigerians for their support, and I believe that myself and my teammates will make it count.”

Nigeria will hope to make it three wins from as many games and end the group stage with a 100 per cent record when they face the Dominican Republic in their final group game at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez, Santo Domingo, on Wednesday.

The Flamingos finished third in the last edition in India and have participated in every edition of the competition since its inception in 2008, reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
