Oshoala rallies Falcons ahead of Japan clash

By Daily Sports Nigeria on July 30, 2024

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala is upbeat about the team’s chances of making it out of their group in the women’s football tournament of the ongoing Paris Olympics Games despite losing their first two matches, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

After starting their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Brazil last Thursday, they fell by the same scoreline against Spain on Sunday, leaving them with a mountain to climb in their last game against Japan.

The Falcons have lost their two matches so far, being the only team in the group without a win, and they are yet to score at the tournament.

Oshoala, 29, is however confident that Nigeria can make it out of the tough group.

“We just have to go all out against Japan. We have to go all out and give everything and make the best out of it because we still have the opportunity to qualify. Hope is not lost,” the Bay FC forward told Totori News.

“To be honest, I wanted them to draw in the game (Brazil vs. Japan), so it keeps the goal open for us, and as fate will have it, they won, and now we have to go all out and shift another motivation for us.

“We’ve played two games, two good games for us as a team, and I think from our last match, we can be better. It is just that we just need to be clinical.”

She, however, agreed that the team are bottom of their group due to missed scoring chances against Spain and Brazil.

“All I can say is that I’m proud of the team’s performance. I think we played well. We played against the world champions, and we had our chances; we had opportunities to score against Spain.

“I think the same thing happened to us in the first game. We were not clinical, and we just need to be clinical upfront, and I think if we start scoring goals, we can compete with any team in the world.”

The Falcons will play Japan at the Stade de Beaujoire in Nantes on Wednesday.
