The 5th edition of the annual JOF U-13 football tournament came to a successful end Sunday, May, 12, 2024 with HB Utility of Ilupeju, Lagos defeating Zamadek Boys of Lagos Island by three goals to emerge winner of the competition.
The finals which was decided at the Sports Centre of University of Lagos Akoka, Lagos saw the two teams giving a good account of themselves to the delight of the fans which included the Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of JOF Nigeria Limited, Dr. Olusegun Olugboyegun, sponsors of the tournament and other top management team of the company as well as some ex- internationals and invited guest.
However, it was the Ilupeju boys that were more purposeful as they got the curtain raiser in the first half before increasing the tally to three goals after the break to keep the game beyond the reach of their opponents from Lagos Island.
Earlier in the third place match, Latoyem FC , Coker recorded a slim 1-0 victory over Strong Dove FC of Orile to emerge as the third best team of the tournament.
Presenting trophies and cash award to the winners, Managing Director of JOF Nigeria Limited Dr. Olusegun Olugboyegun while explaining that the competition is to give hope to grassroots players, expressed happiness with the football artistry displayed by the young players just as he noted that he's looking forward to some of the boys playing for the national teams in future.
He was particularly excited that all the players like in previous editions are 13 years and below noting that his company will soon invite some of them to be part of JOF All Stars.
" I'm particularly happy with what I saw today. The players that participated in this tournament are not just 13 years but some are 10 years and even the Captain of HB Utility is 9 years old.
"The boys we saw today also showed promise which means that by the time they're teenagers and entering 20 years, they'll be playing for Nigeria.
" With the successful end of this competition, we're going to select some of them that will be part of JOF All Stars team. They will be camped and play against teams of their age over the next one year before the team will be disbanded because by then, they would have grown beyond 13 years to 14 and 15 years.
"It's equally important to know that the JOF All Stars team apart from playing football, we also take them out of soccer by exposing them to resource persons who will teach them ethics, morals and make them understand that their talent can get them what other things cannot give them", he concluded.
Winners of the championship went home with a giant trophy, goodie bags and N750,000 while the first runners- up got N500,000 with the second and third runners- up getting N350,000 and N250,000 respectively.
