Can Omorodion break Nigerians 10-goal LaLiga jinx?

By Daily Sports Nigeria on February 24, 2024

Striker, Samu Omorodion, is making a name for himself in the football world and could make history when Deportivo Alaves host Real Mallorca in a LaLiga game on Saturday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Omorodion hit the ground running when he joined Alaves on a season loan deal from Atletico Madrid who paid Granada €6m, his minimum release clause to sign him during the same window.

The 19-year-old Spanish-born player of Nigerian descent scored a consolatory goal against his parent club on his LaLiga debut last August and has taken his tally to nine in 25 La Liga games since arriving at the Mendizorroza stadium.

He is currently tied with former Nigerian striker, Christopher Ohenhen, for the same number of goals scored in a debut season in LaLiga.

Ohenhen scored nine league goals in 19 games in his first LaLiga season for SD Compostela during the 1994/95 season.

And Omorodion will be aiming to continue his rich vein of form which has seen him score four times in his last five league games by bagging a 10th league goal against – the most for any player of Nigerian descent in the history of the LaLiga when Alaves takes on Mallorca.

In the past, some Nigerian players like Ikechukwu Uche and Obafemi Martins came close to achieving this feat.

During the 2006/07 season, former Nigerian striker, Ikechukwu Uche scored eight goals and made one assist in 31 games in his debut season in the LaLiga playing for Recreativo Huelva.

Uche went on to score a total of 43 goals and 42 assists in 194 LaLiga games playing for Granada, Villarreal, Real Zaragoza and Getafe.

Martins who played on loan at Levante from Seattle Sounders during the 2012/13 season scored seven times and made three assists in 21 games for Los Azulgranas.

Omorodion’s meteoric rise at Alaves has not gone unnoticed as teams from France and Italy made enquiries over his availability in January.

According to Dairo Sports, Atlético Madrid rejected €30m for his service and they have scheduled a meeting with his representatives in the coming weeks to increase his release clause.

His current form puts him in a good position as a key player for Atlético Madrid in the future.
