Brentford, EPL back Onyeka after racial abuse

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 31, 2023

Premier League club, Brentford, have leaped in defence of their Nigerian star Frank Onyeka, who was racially abused on social media in the wake of the Bees 2-0 win at Chelsea last Saturday, The PUNCH reports.

Second half goals from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbuemo sealed a remarkable win for the Bees.

Onyeka came on for Mathias Jensen in the 64th minute to help add some steal to Brentford’s midfield as the Bees made history becoming the first EPL team to win all their games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old made three clearances, four tackles and was cautioned in the 86th minute of the encounter.

Following his performance, the Nigeria international was called a ‘monkey wanker’ by an angry fan on X.

Following the racial post, Brentford have come out to defend their star, stating that they have commenced investigations.

“Another incidence of disgusting, racist abuse was directed towards one of our players, this time Frank Onyeka, on social media,” Brentford said in a statement.

“It is hugely disappointing that one of our players has had to deal with this yet again.

“The Online Safety Bill was passed — we hope that its implementation will make social media safer and that it will support our efforts to hold these cowards and the social media companies themselves to account. Frank has our full support at this time as we instigate our investigations with the authorities.”

The Premier League have also condemned the action, reiterating that there’s no place for racism in football.

The EPL body also revealed that the individual will face the consequences.

“We have offered our full support to Frank and the club and will work with relevant authorities to ensure the individual faces the strongest possible consequences.

Racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society.

“Frank has our full support at this time as we instigate our investigations with the authorities. We remain committed to tackling discrimination throughout our game.”

Onyeka has made 49 Premier League appearances since he joined Brentford in 2020 and is in line to play his 50th game for the Bees against West Ham Saturday.
