Ogbonna told The PUNCH Sports Extra that eight teams would compete at the maiden edition of the tournament.
“I’m from Ovungwu, which has 14 communities, eight of these 14 communities will be competing for honours at the competition. I’m just giving back to my community, they’ve been awesome,” Ogbonna told PUNCH Sports Extra.
On if she was thinking of a tournament for girls as well, she replied, “Maybe with time; we will see how it goes.”
Ogbonna, 24, is one of Nigeria’s most outstanding women footballers in recent times, moving up the ladder from a youth international to becoming one of the key players for the Super Falcons.
The versatile left-back featured at the 2016 and 2018 U-20 Women’s World Cup, before she made her Falcons debut five years ago, helping them to a record-extending 11th African title at the 2018 WAFCON in Ghana.
She was part of the Falcons squad for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and helped the former African champions reach the round of 16 losing on penalties to eventual finalists England.
At club level, she started her professional career in the NWFL with Edo Queens (2019-2021), before she moved to Sweden’s Umea IK in 2021 to further her career abroad. She had a short stint at Santa Teresa in 2022, but it was at Turkey’s ALG Spot Kulubu, where she made her Women’s Champions League debut, that she caught the eye of Besiktas scouts with her scintillating performances and the Turkish giants duly cashed in, securing her services last February.
