Enyimba, Wikki win big in NPFL run-in

Eight time champions, Enyimba, made a bold statement in their quest to seal a top-three finish in the abridged 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League with a 5-0 win over Gombe United in Aba on Sunday.

The early match-day 17 kick off saw the current league top scorer, Emeka Obioma, bag a hat trick to take his tally to 15 this season.

The striker opened scoring after 18 minutes while Ikenna Cooper doubled the advantage before halftime.

Sadiq Abubakar added the third and Obioma scored two more goals to complete his hat trick.

With the victory, Enyimba now have 31 points from 17 matches, and will now hope to rubber stamp their Super 6 spot with a good result on match-day 18.

In Jos, second half substitute, Olamilekan Adams and Olalekan Adedayo scored late for Remo Stars as Daniel Ogunmodede’s side fought back to secure a vital 2-1 win over Plateau United.

Akwa United also kept up the chase with a 2-0 win over El-Kanemi Warriors, thanks to a brace from captain Ubong Friday.

In Group B, Sunshine Stars moved within the contenders for the top-three after a hard-fought 2-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in Kaduna.

Reining champions, Rivers United also secured a 2-1 win over ten-man Bayelsa United.

Meanwhile, Wikki Tourists boosted their relegation fight with a 4-0 over Abia Warriors in Bauchi.

They however still have more battles to win to survive the drop as they face Rivers United in an outstanding game this weekend before their last game of the season against Lobi Stars.
