Chelsea on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the end of the 2022/2023 season.
Lampard returns for a second spell in charge, having previously managed Chelsea between July 2019 and January 2021, leading them to a top-four finish in 2019/20.
The co-controlling owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, stressed that the reason why the club hired Lampard back is that he is a legend in the club and an EPL Hall of Famer.
In a joint statement on the club’s official website, the owners said, “We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge. Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club.
“As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.
“We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.
“We have an important game against Wolves on Saturday and then we will turn our attention to our Champions League quarter-final in Madrid next week.
“We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games.”
Lampard, Chelsea’s record goalscorer with 211 strikes, is making a quick return to Premier League management after his tenure at Everton was brought to an end in January this year.
He takes over a Chelsea side lying 11th in the table following the departure of Graham Potter last weekend.
