• Onadipe Wins Maiden Jejune League

Uchechi Okere has successfully defended his title at the 11th yearly Alukimba Table Tennis tournament organised by Elmarino Sports Club, Lagos.

Okere defeated Hilton Enearu in the final to win a record seventh title at the one-day championship held at the Alfred Garden Estate Sports Centre, Oregun, Lagos, while Martins Isoje outclassed Sunny Iwohbo to win the third-place match.

Last year’s edition of the tourney was without a sponsor owing to the death of its former sponsor, Toyin Odunowo in 2020. But this year’s event saw the return of a new sponsor in Chris Anazia, a member of the club in the Diaspora.

In a telephone interview, Anazia said he was happy to identify with the competition and also was satisfied with the outcome of the just-concluded tourney because of the addition of a new event for amateur players. He congratulated all the participants and various winners.

The 11th edition of the tournament was spiced up with the inclusion of the Jejune League, a novel league aimed at capturing members, who are less skilful on the table tennis board. The league was sponsored by Mr. Godwin Edomaruseh.

At the end of the battles, Edomaruseh congratulated Seye Onadipe, who won the league. Nnamdi Ezeli, who was the first runner up and Bello Kayode, who finished third.

He stated that the league had come to stay and expressed hope that it would gain more traction as the years go by.

Speaking after the competition, Team Manager (TM), Babatunde Adebayo, expressed delight that this year’s edition was hugely successful with the massive turn-out of club members and other sports-loving members of the society.

He thanked all participants for their gamesmanship, promising that the competition would continue to evolve with time.

Adebayo thanked the two sponsors and expressed hope that the club would continue to enjoy such patronage from other well-meaning members.

During the prize presentation, Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Dr. Stephen Ighomuaye, accompanied by other BoT members, Edoka Onyeke and Otunba Seyi Adefarati, thanked all members and participants for a good tournament.

Ighomuaye said he was happy that the club has continued to forge ahead with its vision of fostering good health and wellbeing amongst members.
