Choupo-Moting-Inspired Cameroon Beat Mozambique

Cameroon secured a 3-1 victory over Mozambique in a 2022 Fifa World Cup qualification Group D match at the Stade Omnisports in Ngaoundéré on Friday evening.

The victory saw the Indomitable Lions remain second on the group standings - a point behind leaders, Ivory Coast, and the Mambas remained fourth on the table with the two teams set to clash again in Morocco on Monday.

The Indomitable Lions were desperate for a victory having succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast away last month, while the Mambas were keen to secure their first win in Group D having lost 1-0 to Malawi away.

The hosts applied some pressure on the Mambas defence from the start with Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting operating as an attacking midfielder just behind centre forwards Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar.

Choup-Moting, who is on the books of German champions Bayern Munich, broke the deadlock two minutes before the half-hour mark when headed home a delightful cross from Martin Hongla Yma to hand Cameroon a 1-0 lead.

Cameroon were leading 1-0 at halftime with the Indomitable Lions' defence which was marshalled by Michael Ngadeu- Ngadjui having contained were Mozambique's quick strikers Luis Miquissone and Dayo.

The Mambas found it difficult to contain Choupo-Moting after the restart and the lanky attacker grabbed his brace when he beat goalkeeper Ernan with a header to make it 2-0 to Cameroon in the 51st minute with Moumi Ngamaleu grabbing an assist.

Ngamaleu grabbed his second assist of the match in the 63rd minute when he set up Toko Ekambi, who beat Ernan with a decent finish to hand Cameroon a 3-0 lead with the France-based striker netting his fourth goal for the Indomitable Lions.

However, Mozambique managed to grab a goal with 10 minutes left when Geny hit the back of the net to make it 3-1, but his goal proved to be a mere consolation as Cameroon held on to claim a 3-1 victory. (Supersport)
