The Western Nigeria derby of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) between Ikorodu United of Lagos and Sunshine Stars of Akure, Ondo State, ended goalless Sunday evening at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos. It was practically a boring match that had few fans in attendance – which is not surprising considering that Ikorodu have so far failed to impress in their debut season in the top flight.
The hosts, also known as Oga boys, began on a good note with their ground balls but failed to utilise their chances, managing few shots on target.
The second half however began with the visitors missing a good opportunity to score the opening goal of the match. On 55 minutes, Ikorodu United should have taken the lead, but Kabiru Balogun lost a glaring opportunity.
To cap the story of poor strikes, substitute Ifegwu Ojukwu of Ikorodu United missed a penalty on 78 minutes after Monsuru was brought down in the Sunshine vital area.
