Cameroon international Joel Matip has handed English champions Liverpool FC a boost ahead of the new 2020/21 campaign.
The towering central defender has resumed training after recovering from an injury which saw him miss the Reds’ last eight Premier League matches in the 2019/20 season.
The recent campaign saw Matip struggle with injuries and he ended up making only nine appearances in the league and he also missed the 2020 FA Community Shield clash with Arsenal.
The Reds released the following statement as they announced the return of their club captain Jordan Henderson and Matip:
“As 2020-21 draws ever closer, work was ongoing at Melwood as Liverpool continue to gear up for the new campaign – and Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip were among those training on Thursday.”
“Those not on international duty were put through their paces by Jürgen Klopp and his backroom team at the club’s training complex.”
“Henderson and Matip were pictured taking part in the drills as they continue to work their way back to full fitness,” a club statement read.
The 29-year-old Matip and his Liverpool teammates are set to take on Blackpool in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
He played 27 matches and netted once for Cameroon before retiring from international football in 2017. (African Football)
