Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club were on Wednesday evening held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Kano Pillars in the Nigerian top flight. It was an electrifying atmosphere at the full capacity Agege Stadium in Lagos, with fans singing and dancing in support of their teams even before the blast of the referee’s whistle.
MFM took advantage of the first five minutes of the game. They made every attempt to tear down the Kano Pillars defence but to no avail.
MFM took the lead on 28 minutes when Stanley Okorom lifted the ball over his marker, controlled with his right leg, and fired in with his left, with a little deflection on the way. The boys from Kano came out desperately searching for the equaliser and MFM would have their goalkeeper James Aiyeyemi to thank for a 43rd minute save from Pillars’ Adamu Hassan’s side-footed effort.
The second half began with Kano Pillars immediately going for goal but a one-handed save by MFM ’keeper Aiyeyemi kept out Rabiu Ali’s header. Aiyeyemi was at his best again on 62 minutes, tipping Adamu Hassan’s effort over the bar.
Kano Pillars won a penalty one minute later after Monsuru brought down Prince Aggreh of Pillars in the box. Rabiu Ali made no mistake from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the visitors level.
Ifeanyi Ifeanyi would have won it for MFM on 81 minutes, but he hit the free-kick over Pillars’ wall. Two minutes later, Rabiu Ali failed to wrap his foot well on the ball and dragged his shot wide.
Ifeanyi Ifeanyi had a chance to win the game for MFM on the dot of full time but his free-kick hit the bar, to the grief of Agege fans.
