The Football Intermediaries Association of Nigeria (FIAN) has lamented the death of yet another young Nigerian footballer within a fortnight, Chineme Martins of Nasarawa United FC; although this time on active duty.
“As the autopsy report is expected, we acknowledge that accidents are inevitable in such a contact sport; but call on the football authorities to leave no stone unturned in investigating the immediate Cause(s) and Emergency Medical Response upon the incident, which may have been better managed going by video clips of “first responders” trending on the media.
While we mourn; the issues of Match Venue Security/Medicals Facilities and Compulsory Player’s Insurance Policy must be effectively returned back to the front burner beyond beautiful workshop talks, seminar papers, and media lip service,” FIAN said in a statement following Chineme’s death during Sunday’s NPFL Matchday 23 encounter with visiting Katsina United in Lafia.
“We can’t afford waiting till the next tragedy to wail and then return to business as usual; Let’s make our Match Venues/Work Place Safety and Health a constitutional right for our footballers and club officials.
“FIAN is ready and enthusiastic to participate in a renewed concerted effort at practically keeping our footballers safer and insured against avoidable casualties on and off the pitch.”
