Nigerian Footballer Slumps Days To Foreign Trip, Dies

By Daily Sports on February 21, 2020

A player and team captain of one of the most prominent grassroots football clubs in Benin City, Crown FC, on Tuesday collapsed in the pitch during the club’s morning training session and later gave up the ghost in the hospital where he was rushed to.

The player, identified as Patrick, was said to be a lively personality who led the club with distinction.

An eyewitness told me that the tragedy struck in unbelievable fashion. He said:

“We were in the field on Tuesday morning. He got a pass and was trying to control the ball and make another pass when he missed the ball. He staggered and fell down and was even laughing at himself. We all thought he was even trying to waste time because our side had just equalised. Then we noticed he stopped moving on the ground, so everyone rushed to his rescue, trying to wake him up. We tried our best and we rush him immediately to a nearby hospital on emergency, and then to St Philomina hospital. They did all they could but we lost him... very painful, this is someone that had just been scouted by a whiteman. He was due to travel this month end.... Very sad news, most humble and God-fearing player I ever knew. He never fought or argued with anyone.”

The news of the player’s demise has taken the Edo football community by shock and friends of the deceased have been taking to social media to express their grief.

The eyewitness added: “I am still in shock because this is someone very close to me. He had asked me to snap a photo of myself and bring it on the day he died, so we could add to the team website. He led yesterday’s (Tuesday) warm-up training and played very well yesterday. Everyone was saying this guy has really improved not knowing he was saying his goodbye. I have never seen something like this in my whole life. It happened right before our eyes.”
