Rohr Deserves New Contract — Eguavoen

By Daily Sports on December 13, 2019

Former Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen believes the Nigeria Football Federation should reward Gernot Rohr with a new contract, but believes the German tactician should also amend his ways.

Coach Rohr’s current deal is set to expire in June 2020 and has been the subject of much speculation in recent months.

Both parties have said they would like to continue their relationship, but there does appear to be a few sticking points and the NFF recently offered a public rebuke to Rohr over comments he had made in the media about them.

Rohr has come under criticism for not spending enough time in Nigeria and overlooking players in the local league, and Eguavoen says this is a problem for him.

“He does deserve a new contract,” he told reporters. “The only thing I am not too comfortable with is his staying out of the country. When [Clemens] Westerhof was our coach then he had his residence in Ikeja, very close to Airways ground, a duplex was hired for him for a long period of time.

“If he needs to succeed or keep succeeding as he has done so far, he needs to stay here long-term. If it’s short-term, then we are going to have problems.”

Eguavoen also questioned whether a local coach would be good for the side, as some have suggested.

“I don’t know about that. So far so good, he has done well. If you look at the team, completely overhauled, average age now is quite young so I think he’s towing the right path, we should just encourage him.

“However, if it is not going to work, when couples marry and there’s always a problem, the end thing is a divorce amicably. If it is going to work, they [Rohr and the NFF] have to understand each other, accept one other and then move on. The sooner the better.” (African Football)
