Dr Ekuwem Oron Unity Cup For Udom Emmanuel Set To Kick Off

By Obaseki Anthony on November 25, 2019

Preparations are in top gear for the official kick-off of a football tournament tagged “Dr Ekuwem Oro Unity Cup for Udom Emmanuel” billed to commence from Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Oron Sports Stadium, Oron, Akwa Ibom State.

The trophies/vests presentation ceremony held at EMJMM Hotel Dominic Utuk’s Avenue, Uyo, was done by coordinator of the tournament, Comrade John Ekpenyong, to the sponsor of the tournament and Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem.

Ekpenyong, a former Chairman of Akwa Starlets Football Club of Uyo and current National President of Grassroot Sports Federation (GRASOF), said that the tournament became necessary as the Oron nation no longer parades the likes of the legendary Etim Esin, Inyang Abanda and Victor Ofose, hence the need to scout for sponsors of the football tournament, which is aimed at discovering and developing football talents from Oron to compete favourably with their contemporaries in other ethnic groups in Akwa Ibom State.

Ekpenyong disclosed that the tournament was named after Governor Udom Emmanuel and Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem as a way of projecting their image. He disclosed that during the tournament, football scouts and agents will be coming to Oron town to look out for good talents to ply their trade in Europe.

In his remarks, Dr Ekuwem, while receiving the trophies and sports vests, thanked the donor and expressed his readiness to sponsor the tournament, in a bid to support Governor Emmanuel’s interest in the overall sports development of the state. He called on well-meaning individuals of Oron extraction to key in by way of sponsorship of the biggest football event in the Oron nation.

Ekuwem, who was accompanied at the brief ceremony by the former President of Oron Union Lagos Branch, Prince Okung Ntofon, expressed optimism that the event is sure to add value to sporting activities in the state, as the Yuletide season draws closer.
