Breaking: Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid banned from signing players for 2 transfer windows

By Nelson Dafe on January 14, 2016

World football governing body FIFA has slammed world club super powers Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid with bans over irregularities in their transfer businesses.

The Spanish clubs, according to FIFA, will not be allowed to sign players in the next two transfer windows. They have also been asked to pay fines. Athletico will have to cough out £622,000 while Real Madrid has to pay £249,000.

FIFA’s statement reads: “The two clubs were found to have violated several provisions concerning the international transfer and first registration of

minor players as well as other relevant provisions with regard to the registration and participation of certain players in competitions.

“Additionally, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid have been fined CHF 900,000 and CHF 360,000 respectively, while both clubs have been issued with a reprimand and given 90 days in which to regularise the situation of all minor players concerned.”

The sanctions consequently dampens hope of both clubs to make major signings come the end of the current season, even though a FIFA spokesman clarified that both clubs can still sign players during the current transfer window which closes at the end of January.

Real Madrid had hoped to make a summer move for several top players including Manchester United’s David De Gea and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

Both clubs can sign players during the ban but won't be able to register and field the players until the expiration of the band in the summer of 2017.
