Manchester United had multiple chances but could not find the breakthrough that embattled manager Louis Van Gaal desperately needed in a goalless draw with Chelsea on Monday evening at Old Trafford.
The draw ended United’s four-game losing streak in all competitions, though Van Gaal’s side are still without a win since Nov. 21, a span of eight games – six in the Premier League and two in the Champions League.
United started brightly with former Chelsea player Juan Mata striking the bar just three minutes into the game. Just two minutes later, John Terry had Chelsea’s best look at goal in the first half but saw his header from a corner remarkably tipped over by United keeper David De Gea.
Anthony Martial came the closest to breaking the deadlock on 17 minutes when he beat Courtois low at his near post only to see the ball rebound off the inside of the woodwork.
Chelsea had the first sight at goal after the break as De Gea made a double save to deny first Pedro and then Cesar Azpilicueta.
It was then Courtois’ turn to keep the scores level at the other end as he stopped Ander Herrera at point-blank range.
Nemanja Matic had a chance to put Chelsea ahead after the hour mark when he broke clear of the United defence, but he blasted well over the net with only De Gea to beat. (ESPN.go.com)
