Flying Eagles Crash Out of U-20 World Cup

By Daily Sports on June 4, 2019

Senegal booked a U20 World Cup quarter-final ticket as Nigeria’s hopes of winning a first title were ended by a 2-1 defeat in Lodz.

First half goals from Amadou Sagna and Ibrahima Niane powered the Young Lions of Teranga past the Flying Eagles with Aniekeme Okon’s effort standing as mere consolation.

Sagna struck in the 36th minute of Monday’s last-16 tie to put Senegal in control, and doubled the lead as Niane tucked home Alpha Diounkou cross.

Diounkou found space on the left hand side of Nigeria’s defence, crossed into the Flying Eagles’ area as Ikouwem Utin’s marshalled failed to stop the striker from slotting past Oremade Olawale.

Early in the second half, Paul Aigbogun’s boy halved the scoreline after impressive Okon deflected Isacc Makanjuola’s free-kick past Dialy Ndiaye.

Nigeria pressed in search of a second equaliser but Yira Sor missed their best chance to level, screwing off-target when faced with an open goal after Muhamed Tijani dropped a cross into his path.

Coach Youssouph Dabo’s side can now look forward to facing either South Korea or Japan in Bielsko-Biała, with Sagna increasing his goal tally to four. (Goal)
