The 2019 Edo state Aiteo FA cup has come and gone. Bendel Insurance reclaimed the title they used to win at ease before the emergence of some top quality grassroots clubs in the state as well as that of Dynamite Force FC of Iyamo who won last year's edition, pipping Insurance 1-0 in the final played in Iyamo.
With many grassroots clubs on parade, there were a number of young teenage players who impressed very well in the competition.
One of such players is Jeremiah Salami of Benin Warriors FC of Benin City. The 15-year old midfielder was a real revelation in the 2019 FA cup, playing with great technical quality and confidence that belie his younge age.
In Benin Warriors first game against Freedom Assembly FC, Salami took real charge of the midfield from the start, selling dummies, spraying passes and scoring a fantastic opening goal with a scorcher of a striker from just inside the penalty box.
Benin Warriors went ahead to sin the contest 2-0.
Then came the big match against Dynamite Force, the defending champions. Jeremiah wowed everyone with his dexterity on the ball, playing with such calm intelligence that confused Dynamite players anytime they attempted a tackle on him.
Though Dynamite later won 2-0, it was clear to everyone watching that Salami is a player that has true potentials to be a great played in international football.
I have had the joy of managing the player for years now as a member of my Benin Warriors club, and I am proud to have blooded him in a couple of FA cup competitions now,as part of my club's policy of playing young players in big games if they are good. If they are good enough,they old enough.
There are a couple of other young players who are equally showing great signs as they progress in the game and with time, I will write and talk about them.
A Dynamite player told.me.after the game: "Please you are doing a good job with these guys. Ensure players like Jeremiah keep their heads and go on to be super starts that their talents promise."
It is what I exactly hope to continue doing with the lads,including Jeremiah who I teasingly call the "small Pogba".
