Give Success, Onyekuru chance, Lawal urges Rohr

By Daily Sports on November 22, 2018

Garba Lawal has urged Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr to give Isaac Success and Henry Onyekuru confidence to solve Super Eagles’ blunt attack.

The west Africans’ only goal in the recently concluded international break came off South Africa’s Buhle Mkhwanazi in their 1-1 stalemate at the FNB Stadium to secure a place in the next year’s African Cup of Nations.

On Tuesday, they failed to breach Uganda’s defence in a friendly encounter at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, thus, settling for a goalless draw.

Super Eagles top scorer in the Afcon qualifiers, Odion Ighalo missed the two games owing to an injury.

His spot was taken by Kelechi Iheanacho [vs. South Africa] and Victor Osimhen [vs. Uganda], with Watford and Galatasaray forwards coming in as substitutes in both encounters.

“The coach should give Success and other strikers the confidence to play. Success has been doing well in Watford,” Lawal told Goal.

“Onyekuru is also a very good striker but the coach must give them the confidence. If we don’t have belief in them there will be problem. These are two strikers that can play well in attack for the Super Eagles.

“They must be given enough playing time to show their quality. The coach must work on them to get the best from them.

“Ighalo scored home and away against Libya, fine. If a striker fails to score then we start criticising him and if he scores, he is everything. There is a time Ighalo will call it off.

“If he retires, Nigeria will continue playing just like when we retired,” he concluded. (Goal)
