Holyfield predicts outcome of expected Anthony Joshua v Deontay Wilder fight

By Daily Sports on May 31, 2018

Hall of Famer Evander Holyfield has weighed in on the Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder saga as talks continue to stall for the super fight.

The former heavyweight world champion has also revealed his pick for the dream match-up.

Holyfield, who was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame last year, is hopeful that the fight will push through.

“Well, I think it would be a great fight. I think that’s what boxing needs. A little shot in the arm. Both of the fighters are good fighters,” he said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Real Deal, as Holyfield was once popularly known, gave his compatriot his backing should the two heavyweights eventually meet.

“With Deontay, I just think it’s a guy who’s got the faith to do anything.”

Negotiations between the two fighters’ camps have hit a wall, with the location of the bout becoming the latest sticking point.

AJ has never fought outside the UK, and his promoter Eddie Hearn believes it is imperative that they do justice to all they have accomplished here in the UK.

The vocal promoter also gave an ultimatum for an announcement of Joshua’s next move.

“We are probably about two weeks away from a decision on AJ’s next fight. September has been earmarked for his return and all focus remains on Deontay Wilder,” Hearn told Daily Mail.

“AJ and the team believe that after everything that’s been built here, the UK should be the home of this historic undisputed bout and conversations continue with the Wilder camp.”

The Bronze Bomber, meanwhile, insists that the fight will happen and even gave potential dates for the title fight.

“If we have it [the fight] in England, it'll be September, but if it’s here in America, then it’ll be November,” Wilder told Fight Hub TV.

“We’re still in negotiations so I don’t have a time frame on it just yet, but I want to let everybody to know the fight will happen.”

Wilder has been vocal on social media about his desire to fight the British superstar and claims he has offered AJ $50 million to hold the fight in the USA.

Hearn, however, revealed that Joshua is willing to take a pay cut to have the fight on home soil, and even went as far to reveal the backup fight should negotiations fall through.

The two heavyweights are both undefeated, with Joshua holding a record four world titles as opposed to Wilder’s one. With the Bronze Bomber the only one standing in AJ’s path to complete domination of the heavyweight division, it seems that a fight of this magnitude should only be inevitable.
