Shock and grief as Bendel Insurance Media Officer slumps and dies

By Nelson Dafe on May 12, 2018

It was with sadness and shock that football followers in Edo State received the news on Friday that the Media Officer of NPFL side Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin City, Edosoghe Eguakun, had died.

As at the time of filing the reports there was confusion as to the actual cause of his death.  Edo State media were reporting that Eguakun slumped and died in the early hours of Friday, but a sports presenter in the state’s private television station ITV, Comrade Emason Edosa, says he has gathered a more disturbing version of how the media officer died. Edosa said: “The news I that filtered in this morning was that he slumped and died. But I’m hearing this evening that his corpse was found along Ihama Road (GRA, Benin). Something is amiss.

“Eguakun was part of a crack team of officials put together by the Edo State Government to oversee the positive turnaround of the fortunes of the state-owned Bendel Insurance which has been mired in the second tier of Nigerian football after its relegation from the Premier League about a decade ago.”

Eguakun had been active on the social media scene, giving updates on the club as they begun their campaign to gain promotion.
