A bloody cult war currently raging on in Benin City between two confraternities, the Black Axe (Aiyee) and Marphites, is taking its toll on one of Nigeria’s most successful grassroots clubs, BJ Foundation.

At the Isemwenro area of Central Benin where the club has its training pitch (Arinze Primary School) the two cult groups found a theater for murder with a number of young men bludgeoned to death, lifeless bodies lying on the street.

This was the case on Tuesday afternoon when some unwary players of BJ came in for training in the afternoon.

One player said: “When we got to Isemwenro on Tuesday we met an unusual silence. It was eerily quiet and then one woman told us to go back that cultists were killing each other in the area. She pointed to the junction of the Isemwenro road and told us there was a lifeless body lying there. As we started to hurry back, with our sports bags hanging on our shoulders, we saw a Hilux truck loaded with combat-ready policemen who sped towards us. We quickly brought out our boots from our bags and, satisfied that we were footballers, they let us go.”

The club has suspended training until the situation improves.

Cult wars have become a big scourge in the Nigerian society and it continues unabated.

Zlatan’s Fine Scoring Form Pushes Rolly FC To Semis Of Bet9ja Royal Cup; Bloody Cult

Rolly FC of Koko, Delta State, have zoomed to the semi-final of the ongoing Bet9ja Royal Cup competition courtesy of a 2-0 win over hard-fighting De Unique FC of Asaba.

In a thrilling quarter-final encounter played at the Kwale Township Stadium, Rolly overcame an early scare of De Unique pressure to register a goal midway into the first half through a brilliant strike through Precious Ediae, a.k.a Zlatan, who thundered home a trademark unstoppable shot just inside the box.

Ediae has been in great form this year in grassroots football and in this competition particularly where he has recorded five goals so far, making him a shoo-in for the highest goal scorer award.

In the second half, De Unique came all out to get the equaliser but were held at bay by some astute defending from the Rolly team whose defence was well anchored by fine center back Edafe Steven.

Chinedu Chima meanwhile was a major orchestrator of Rolly’s fine moves, the central midfielder showing dexterity in his ball control and packs some fierce shots in his legs. Already he has scored a screamer in this competition that is a big contender for goal of the tournament.

Chima won the Man-of-the-match award at the end of the Rolly vs De Unique game.
