It was a colourful ceremony at the weekend in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State when the grand finale of the first edition of Hon. Julius Pondi Peace Cup was played.

The sponsor of the tournament, Hon. Julius Pondi thanked everybody for the turn out at the final, as he pledged to continue to sponsor the tournament every year.

“It is my wish to see players discovered in this tournament playing for our Premier League teams, national teams in future and aboard. My aim for this tournament is to bring the youth together and make peace in the area. Today I must say that I am happy to see the turnout among the youths and the good people of Burutu.”

According to him, he used the occasion to salute his brothers and worthy compatriots,  Samson Siasia, Edema Fuludu, Taribo West, Finidi George and others who on account of their past professional football exploits, brought honour to Nigeria and their native Ijaw land.

The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick in his speech at the occasion thanked Hon. Julius Pondi for the Peace Cup tournament and promised to be with him in the next edition. “This is real grassroots development, this is the kind of programme I am ready to support and encourage and I also want to thank the other sponsors to be here in the next edition.”

The former U-23 coach Samson Siasia said he felt great, seeing some future players in this tournament. “I see more than five players which in few years will play for the country,” Siasia declared.

The tournament took place at Burutu Sports Playground, NPA. In all, 16 teams took part for the month long championship.
