Rivers lucky against Ikorodu City – Finidi

By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 25, 2025

Rivers United coach Finidi George has admitted that this team was lucky to have got a 1-0 win over Ikorodu City during their Nigeria Premier Football League match-day 30 game in Port Harcourt on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2022 NPFL champions left it late against the newly promoted side with Bolu Sholumade’s late strike securing the hard-earned win which closed the gap between them and Remo Stars to five points.

As the game seemed to be headed for an uncompromising draw, Sholumade, who joined Rivers United in January raised the roof of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium after latching on to a ball that was headed into his path by Stephen Manyo off a free-kick from Temple Emekayi.

After the win, Finidi spoke highly of their opponents as he hopes to keep chasing leaders Remo Stars whose game against Lobi Stars was postponed.

“It was a tough one. I felt if our goal in the first half had stood, we would have controlled the game a little bit more. I also felt some of the players were tired due to the journey to Maiduguri and playing in Abuja by midweek,” Finidi said after the game.

“That was a lucky one, but we will take it any day anytime, We are happy with the victory.

“They play good football and they bring physicality as well. We must commend them for the run they are having.”

With the gap between them and Remo now reduced to five points in the meantime, Finidi is still hopeful the league leaders would slip in the title race with eight games remaining.

“We just have to keep pushing to keep piling the pressure on Remo. We will see how things go but for us, we want to keep winning.”

Rivers United’s next game is against neighbours Bayelsa United who grabbed a point against Enyimba in Aba on Sunday.
