The U17 Women National Team, Flamingos, on Thursday arrived at their camp site in Santo Domingo, a city in the Dominican Republic, for a two-week intensive camping exercise ahead of the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals held from October 16 to November 3 in the country.
The team departed the country on Tuesday after receiving pep talks from NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who visited their hotel.
Flamingos are lodged in Group A alongside host country Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and New Zealand, whom they face in their opening game on October 16 at Estadio Cibao, Santiago de Los Caballeros, starting at 9 p.m. Nigerian time.
Bankole Olowookere’s charges will then face Ecuador for their second game on October 19 before rounding off their preliminary assignment against the host country three days later at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez, Santo Domingo.
The Flamingos have been to every edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, missing only the 2018 edition. Before the 2022 edition, they’ve only gotten as far as the quarterfinals in the 2010, 2012, and 2014 editions, respectively. They broke this “jinx” in 2022 by defeating the USA in the quarterfinals via penalties after an entertaining and tightly-closed contest during regulation time, which ended 1-1.
