Former Spurs and England number one, Paul Robinson, has said that Nigerian midfielder, Alex Iwobi, should not have thrown his shirt at the Everton fans at Bournemouth after their loss, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former goalkeeper said Frank Lampard’s side went over to the fans at full-time to show their appreciation after they travelled to watch their away game.

The Toffees were humiliated 3-0 by Bournemouth on Saturday, the second time in a week the Merseyside club suffered defeat at the Vitality Stadium after their 4-1 loss saw them crash out of the EFL Cup.

Everton’s travelling supporters were visibly angry in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat and the Nigeria international saw this first-hand after he handed his shirt to the crowd, but it was quickly thrown back onto the pitch.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the scenes at the away end, Robinson said, “A lot of the time players go over to fans to say thanks. They want to show their appreciation for the fact that they have spent money to come and watch them.

“The players will know they have been poor and they will have been almost embarrassed to go over. They are not looking for the fans applause. They just wanted to show appreciation.

“Look, Iwobi should not have thrown his shirt in. That was a bad choice probably. Sharing your shirt is something done in a time of celebration.

“In Iwobi’s defence, he has been one of their best players this season. I really like the way he is playing.”
