Bent Slams Aubameyang For Poor Form After New Deal

By Daily sports on December 3, 2020

Former Premier League forward Darren Bent has criticised Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for his performances since signing a new deal at the club.

Aubameyang has scored just one Premier League goal since signing a new £250,000-a-week contract in September. The Gabon international’s lack of form in front of goal has had a direct impact on the North London club who have endured a dismal run of form.

Arsenal currently occupy 14th spot on the league standings having lost five of their 10 matches this season and already eight points behind leaders and fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who they face in North London on Sunday.

Aubameyang penned a new three-year deal on September 15 to put an end to speculation surrounding his future, but has scored just four goals in 12 appearances across all competitions this season, and Bent is of the opinion that the 31-year-old has slacked off since ‘securing the bag’.

“They [Arsenal] can’t get the best out of Aubameyang, he’s not playing well at all. But not only that as well, I know we keep talking about ‘we don’t create chances for him’ but he’s got to do more himself as well,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“You can’t keep obviously blaming everyone else because he was superb up until he signed the contract. We do need creativity in there, I understand that, but he can still be doing a lot more for the team as well.

He continued: “When you look at Aubameyang’s performances before he signed the contract, he was running after everything, he was tracking back, putting tackles in. People didn’t really speak about their creativity then because he was doing so much. He was going above and beyond so people expected that to continue.

“He started against Fulham, superb again and got this contract and he just seems to have come away from it a little bit.”

“I understand that strikers go through patches in their career where you’re not quite scoring goals and confidence is low but you can still put effort in, work-rate in, and I think right now questions have to be asked.”

Aubameyang has scored 74 goals in 121 appearances for Arsenal since moving to Emirates Stadium from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018. (African Football)
