Boma Iyaya has been Commissioner of Sports in Rivers State since the inception of the very performing administration of Governor Nyesom E. Wike and I must confess he has worked at cross purposes with the great intentions of the ever listening and peoples’ hard working Governor Wike who has not only turned the oil rich State into construction site but a State where the rule of law holds sway.

In my mind and also to other objective observers of Rivers State sports, I would posit that whoever recommended Boma to the no nonsense but very articulate Governor Wike must be one that the governor has lots of respect and much regard for to tolerate Boma Iyaya thus far despite his many goofs that has brought the State in the middle of the road stranded many times.

In short, the Commissioner has been abstract in most of his actions and inactions since he assumed duties as Sports Commissioner. He is so proud and full of himself; a Mr. Know All and this obviously speak volumes of the makeup of whoever recommended him to Governor Wike for appointment.

Boma has performed well below expectation if one takes a critical look at the enormous resources at his disposal and if we juxtapose that with the way and manner his principal is touching lives in the entire Rivers State.

However, what prompted this write up this week is the pronouncement of Boma Iyaya on the recent decision by the Nigeria Professional Football League that successfully ended the last season where all stakeholders were fully privy to all decisions before the final approval was taken and announcement made.

However, trust loud mouthed Boma Iyaya; he kicked against the well informed decision, breathing thunder that he would not be alive and see the decision stand the test of time. To an informed follower, commentators and pundits, Boma’s outbursts on the well thought out decision by the appropriate football body remain not only unfortunate but reckless.

I don’t know who has been advising Boma Iyaya thus far confirming that he has again put his foot wrongly, typical of him in Sports Ministry since he became Commissioner where he can hardly and vividly point to any figure as achievement. He has sadly created for himself the image of one that is always chasing shadows which gave him the notorious name as nonconcrete Sports Commissioner ever from Rivers State of all States in the country.  

Boma ridiculed himself further with the kind of weak arguments he put forward while crying wolf where there is none as far as the decision by NPFL was concerned. To be honest with you dear readers, Boma has no basis and concretes than bringing to the fore his usual confusionist stance.

Let me say here that the writer is a fan of Amaju Pinnick as the ardent reader of this column would attest and I clapped for him to high heavens when he complied with best accepted practices and standards with the decision that saw Rivers United FC grab a slot in the next CAF Confederations Cup tournament with Kano Pillars.

Let me again give it to him that Amaju Pinnick aside being a cat with nine lives has good and wide Knowledge in football administration. Also he was one that broke the jinx that no President of NFA or NFF can serve a second term, so the kite Boma flew the other day was not only childish but like that of a drowning man looking for something to hold for survival.

One is still at a loss why Boma Iyaya was allowed to not only display his ignorance on the subject matter or field he knows next to nothing but disgraced and embarrassed Rivers State where Governor Wike who arguably is one of the top flight performing governors presides.

Boma Iyaya’s outburst is baffling because the decision of the NPFL to place the four teams that would represent Nigeria at the next Africa Club Championships remains one of the best ever and people like Boma should be called to order and not be allowed to distract other club sides to allow them full concentration to face the continental challenge.

We should ignore Boma Iyaya’s goof because of the kind of personality he has created for himself. His mission is a lost battle with his empty headed clappers and clowns. Forward with the popular and widely accepted step and decision that peacefully ended the NPFL season.
