New Nigeria Star Dessers Completes Genk Move

By Daily Sports on July 3, 2020

New Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers has completed his transfer to former Belgian champions KRC Genk.

The 25-year-old striker has joined Genk from Dutch Eredivisie club Heracles Almelo where he impressed during the 2019/20 season.

Dessers was jointly awarded the Eredivisie Top Goalscorer award alongside Steven Berghuis with 15 goals apiece.

This was after the Eredivisie season was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Genk’s sporting director Dimitri de Conde lauded the lethal marksman, who netted 15 goals in the Eredivisie during the 2019/20 campaign.

“Cyriel has developed excellently in the Netherlands as a footballer and as a real goalscorer,” De Conde told the club’s official website.

“He is Belgian, still young and ready to take the next step in his career. The fact that he was a supporter of our club as a child only makes it even better.”

Dessers, who was born in Belgium, received his Nigerian passport after switching his international allegiance to Nigeria earlier this year.

He was born in the Belgian city of Tongeren to a Belgian father and a Nigerian mother. (African Football)
