Now That Rohr Is In, Yobo Must Brace Up To Justify His Selection

By Daily Sports on June 1, 2020

At last, after much hassle, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the second term contract of Franco-German technical hand of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr thereby reaffirming the stand of this digital newspaper and column, as the NFF/Rohr hide and seek game lasted.

For the records, this reporter was at the forefront when the search and eventual employment of foreign head coach for the senior national team began and ended, some years back.

Daily Sports ran insiders’ exclusive reports then. Our newspaper broke the news on how Gernot Rohr suddenly appeared on the scene without the knowledge of the NFF technical committee headed then by very suave Barrister Chris Green. We could still recall the written instruction that came from a highly placed individual within the football house, which the no nonsense Green queried vehemently but was assuaged by his other committee and executive committee members before he gave peace a chance for Rohr to sail through.

It is instructive to note that the Rivers State FA boss, after that unpleasant face-off voluntarily, after self conviction did not come for second term. We also must give it to him that when these NFF/Rohr camps were trading words, Green vividly declared that he would retrieve his statement. He said the football governing body was just playing mind game that Rohr’s contract would be renewed.

Daily Sports, through this column ran Green’s assertion on this page. We again was among the first to report  NFF’s confirmation of the renewal of his contract before the apex football governing body in the country finally issued a statement thereby stamping our story.

We have run a very successful race and now the crown has been won. Now it is incumbent on Rohr to justify the fight few of us waged because of his hard work and love for his job including his unquenchable appetite to steer the three African champions to more victories in the continent and the five star performances at the World Cup stage.

Daily Sports crew wishes him all the best and unparalleled concentration for the task ahead and enjoins NFF executive committee board led by Pinnick Amaju to step up hands of fellowship more than it did during his its term for the good of the game and for the greatness of the country at large.

For his assistants, the stage in now set for everyone in the crew to cooperate with the foreign technical adviser because his unconditional success will rub off handsomely on all.

This is the hour for Joseph Yobo to play his role beautifully to bring in to bear more sanity, discipline, stabilization, cohesion and sundry into this set or class of the Super Eagles to achieve greatness than the 1980, 1994, 2013 sets.  This as part of his wealth of experience will help him not to be divisive and ambitious that would do the side more harm than why he was employed in the first place above the more qualified certificated ex-internationals.

His role in the term is strategic and central too and he must brace up to that enormous responsibility the whole nation has placed squarely on his broad shoulders. It is a life time toga or cross he must bear decisively and with all precision it deserves too, no more, no less.

As the new legs are still being sourced to beef up the team, all hands must be on deck that this trend of quicksilver like thinking approach would be done with equity hands, for clarity sake.

As this tone is being set, the stakeholders should see this as national assignment by all and for all. Football is our tool of unity as the present political leaders have failed. Nigerians have often looked up to the arena for succor and it has come handy to smoothen our nerves after witnessing the very harsh, lame duck and hostile political scene heavily left with deep hopelessness.

Rohr, Yobo, Agu, etc., should know the enormity of the task ahead and stamp their feet on ground firmly and serve us the best. A mixture of the young and the experienced for the present Eagles squad would remain the best for Nigerians this present moment and circumstance. Nothing would be good enough. We will continue the trending discussion on our social media handles. Come over and keep shooting hard, till next week!!
