This is the time that calls out for men and women with large hearts. As the global coronavirus pandemic stifles humanity, fills hospital wards and overwhelms morgues all over the world with an overflow of the sick and the dead, those lucky to still be alive have been shuttered in their homes as a result of the common sense of trying to avoid the deadly contagious disease.

The obvious fallout of this stay-at-home policy is that those on the lower spectrum of the economic scale are suffering. No money to feed themselves, no money to buy drugs to heal their ailments.

Many Nigerians are in dire conditions and, contrary to how governments in some countries have acted to send direct financial succour to the struggling homes, they have been waiting in vain so far for their government to help put money in their pockets to take care of their needs since they can't go out to hustle now.

In their magnanimity though, some well to do Nigerians are stepping up to help. One of them is Super Eagles and Lille striker Victor Osimhen, who is giving out some cash to Nigerians who are Facebook friends of his.

Using his Facebook account Vicky Jay Oluwaspicy, Osimhen is using a fun way of lightening up the mood in this difficult time while also sending help to some in desperate need.

The player, who is widely sought after by top clubs in the world today following his exploits with Lille this season, declared in a Facebook post that any friend who could spell his name vertically and correctly in the comment section of the post will get N15,000 credited to his bank account and also asked friends to drop their bank account details promising to randomly credit their accounts with some undisclosed amount of money.

As at the time of writing, the comments section of the said post has been flooded by commenters who are trying to spell the star’s name vertically and also those who had written their bank account details.

It is not yet clear as at the time of writing this column who has won the N15,000 award and whether anyone who commented on the thread has had his account credited.

Osimhen’s gesture is a commendable one though, if he keeps his words as expected. Any thong that would lift spirits now is a welcome development and for those that would benefit from it would be really grateful.

Hopefully, other Nigerian professional can follow suit and reach out to their poor fans back home in their fatherland.

Many come back home during their breaks from overseas club football and spend stupendous amounts of money on merrymaking. Now they can go further and help those in need. The country needs food banks to save people from hunger and starvation. Footballers can be inspirational stars not only on the pitch but also off it.
