For three days, youth players in Benin City under the age of 16 strutted their footballing stuffs as they battled for a place in the national competition of the Bayern Munich Youth Cup scheduled for Abuja.

At the end of the three day exercise which lasted from December 2 to 4, 10 players were chosen by the organisers to represent the Edo State team at the national finals of the Bayern Munich Youth Cup.

It was an interesting show of speed, technical brilliance and a good understanding of tactical ideas from the young lads that were on parade at the Ahuogba Sports Crescent pitch in Benin City as the players battled to be selected.

The format of the trials saw youth clubs playing matches against each other and in one of the highlight games of the competition, Benin Warriors beat Ine Stars 2-1.

The final game which held on Wednesday morning was between a selection of 22 best players of the trials.

In the end, two players from Eagles Wings FC, 2 from Benin Warriors FC, one from Adia Sports FC and one from Shooting Arrows FC made the final cut to represent the Edo State team at the national finals.

The FC Bayern Youth Cup is the world’s biggest and oldest international youth football tournament (series) carried out by a football club. Since its introduction in 2012 it has been conducted on a yearly basis in cooperation with existing FC Bayern partners in selected countries (including Brazil, China, India, Italy, Japan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Singapore, Thailand and the USA). The aim is to give children worldwide the chance to show their talent, irrespective of their social background.

FC Bayern has been organising local selection tournaments with local partners since 2012. These can vary greatly in scope, from one-day events to nationwide qualifying tournaments lasting several months with more than 10,000 players. These lead to a National Final in the participating country, at which a FC Bayern representative selects the so-called National Team, which consists of the ten best male players of the participating country aged 14 to 16 years. This team is then allowed to travel to Munich in May to take part in the FC Bayern Youth Cup World Final and compete against the players or teams of the other participating countries. The World Final takes place annually in the Allianz Arena on the day following the last home match of FC Bayern.

The National Teams already arrive a few days in advance to take part in a five-day training camp on Säbener Strasse and train with FC Bayern youth coaches. In addition, players from all over the world will receive a comprehensive social program during their stay in Munich. They will meet FC Bayern 1st team players, visit the city of Munich, visit FC Bayern's last home match and finally take part in the FC Bayern Youth Cup World Final on the grass of the world-famous Allianz Arena.

In 2019, teams from China, USA, Singapore, India, Nigeria and Germany and Thailand took part in the FC Bayern Youth Cup. The winner in 2019 was Team USA.

In 2020, the FC Bayern Youth Cup will be played again.
